COMPUTER CLUBHOUSE |
The computer clubhouse is an out-of-school learning environment for young people and journalists to learn new computer skills and perfect on existing ones under adult mentor and staff. At DevComs computer clubhouse, we offer free internet access for users to make researches and develop themselves. Our computer clubhouse provides creative learning environment for journalists. The facilities also provide an integrated approach for interaction with NGO personnel, scientists, researchers and students.
The clubhouse was established based on the recognition that journalists need to widen their horizons, through skill building in order to explore new ideas, develop new skills, and build more confidence to face the challenges of the new media technology. In addition, the concept of the computer clubhouse as practiced in the developed countries became more necessary especially at this period when most youth are unemployed or rather not employable due to inadequate skills.
The Computer Clubhouse was established in 2002 with support from the Ford Foundation office for West Africa. The Clubhouse is an aspect of the activities of the Media Resource and Advocacy Center (MRAC), a project of Development Communications (DEVCOMS) Network.
- The Clubhouse is guided through a number of core principles:
- Building capacity through hands-on training
- Help youth develop their inherent talents and follow their own interests
- Create a journalist-friendly environment for up-to-date access to information, data and other interest resources
- Cultivate an emergent community of online journalists and youth learners
